Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast freezing conditions ahead of unusual change for December

Temperatures are set to plummet at the start of the week ahead of an unusual change to the weather for December.

Met Eireann is forecasting -1C conditions for Ireland on Monday night before some unseasonably warm weather becomes dominant in the days ahead thanks to a high pressure system.

There will be a lot of dry weather on Monday for much of the country with sunny spells.

However, it will remain cloudy in the south and southeast with patchy rain and drizzle and a few isolated showers will also occur in the northwest and highest temperatures of 5 to 9C.

Monday night will be dry with good clear spells and cloud pushing in across the northwest overnight, bringing some patchy drizzle towards dawn.

Overnight lows will drop to between -1 to +4C, with a touch of frost in places. Southwest winds will strengthen in the northwest, but will stay light elsewhere allowing some mist and fog patches to form.

A forecaster said for the days ahead: "Cloudy for much of Connacht and Ulster [on Tuesday] with patchy rain and drizzle at times through the day and moderate to fresh southwest winds.

"Holding dry in Munster and Leinster with some sunny spells and light to moderate southwest winds. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11C.

"Generally cloudy with some clear spells in the south [on Tuesday night]. Staying largely dry but light patchy rain or drizzle will push into the northwest in fresh to strong southwesterly winds.

"Lowest temperatures of 7 to 10C across the north and west, colder in the south and east with lows of 4 to 6C."

They continued: "Cloudy with outbreaks of rain developing over the northern half of the country [on Wednesday].

"Staying much drier with sunny spells in the south, with just patches of drizzle. Highest temperatures of 9 to 11C.

"The rain and drizzle over the northern half of the country will gradually ease as winds become light [on Wednesday night]. Further south, clearer skies and light winds will allow patchy mist or fog to develop. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9C.

"Thursday [will be a] fairly cloudy day with limited bright spells, but generally dry and calm. Highest temperatures of 8 to 10C.

"Largely cloudy for Friday and the weekend but staying mainly dry although the odd spot of light rain or drizzle is possible. Generally light southerly winds with temperatures staying in the high single figures."
