Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast freezing cold snap as update given on chances of snow

Ireland is set to be hit by a cold snap in the coming days with the mercury set to dip below zero.

Temperatures are forecast to drop to -1C on Wednesday and Thursday night with one region to bear the brunt of the chilly weather.

It comes as the UK prepares to see snow from midnight as Britain looks set to endure the coldest weather of autumn so far.

Given our nearest neighbours will feel the chill this week, many Irish people have been questioning whether we can also expect snow flurries soon.

According to Met Eireann, there are no indications as yet that Ireland will be hit by snow in the coming days or weeks.

The national forecaster's long-range forecast for November says that "temperatures will remain slightly above average" until the end of the month.

This means that snow, although not definitely ruled out, is unlikely to arrive shortly.

Before then, Wednesday night will be mainly dry with clear spells. Temperatures will be between -1 to 4C, while it will be coldest in the midlands with localised frost.

A forecaster said: "Thursday will start largely dry and bright apart from lingering showers over Ulster. Patchy cloud will increase from the northwest through the day, but it will remain dry overall with just isolated showers. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11C.

"Mostly dry with clear spells in the midlands, east and south at first allowing some frost to develop, along with some mist or fog patches [on Thursday night].

"Cloud will build from the northwest through the night and thicken with patchy drizzle along northern and western coasts.

"Lowest temperatures of -1 to 4C generally, though a degree or two higher in parts of the north and west with temperatures elsewhere recovering later in the night. Winds will be light westerly or variable.

"After a cloudier start to [Friday], some bright or sunny spells will develop. There will be some patchy light rain and drizzle about, mostly over the north and west of the country, while staying largely dry further east. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12C.

"Friday night will be milder than previous nights. There will be more cloud about but some clear spells too, the best of these will be in the southeast.

"There will be patchy light rain and drizzle at times in the west, becoming more persistent in the northwest by morning. Lows of 4 to 8C."

Looking towards the weekend, rain in the northwest will track southeastward on Saturday, breaking up as it does so and staying largely dry in the southeast for much of the day.

Drier and clearer conditions will move into northwestern areas by evening, with highs of 12 to 14C.

It will be mostly dry on Sunday, remaining cloudier over the northwest with light outbreaks of rain and drizzle at times.

It will be dry with some sunny spells elsewhere and highest temperatures generally ranging 9 to 12C.
