Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast as experts warn of 'strong storm' and Dublin Airport snow latest

Met Eireann has forecast a mainly dry and breezy day on Monday with good sunshine and the odd shower as other experts warn that a storm is on the way for the country.

The National Forecaster is predicting "wet and windy weather on Tuesday night and into Wednesday" but other forecasters are warning of "very strong winds" hitting the south west and west.

The Arpege model shows the storm hitting the west while other models show the storm move further east and hitting the south and east of the country.

Carlow Weather said there was the "potential for a nasty spell of weather Tuesday night and into Wednesday".

They said: "Still a lot of uncertainty on track and intensity though. Latest Max wind speed charts along with GFS pressure chart here.

"Along with the risk of strong winds is the risk of heavy rainfall but again there is uncertainty here. Continue to keep an eye on weather forecasts over coming days.

"Also of interest is the GFS charts showing a risk of colder weather for Christmas Day.

"A long way off still but the last three updates from GFS have shown a risk of cold air plunging down over Ireland for Christmas Day. A nice crisp cold day would be nice I think."

And looking ahead to Christmas Day, leading bookmaker Paddy Power seems to think there's a decent chance of snow at Dublin Airport with odds of 4/1 on a White Christmas.

Here's how tonight and the rest of the week is looking according to Met Eireann:

Monday night: "Continuing mainly dry tonight with good clear spells. Some mist patches may form in light to moderate southerly winds. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 5 degrees."

Tuesday: "Dry tomorrow with good sunny spells and just isolated showers. Becoming cloudier during the evening. Highest temperatures of 8 or 9 degrees in mainly moderate southerly winds. Wet and windy weather expected Tuesday night and into Wednesday. Generally unsettled with rain and showers at times. Breezy too but holding relatively mild for the time of year."

Wednesday: "Wet and windy to begin. Strong and gusty mainly southerly winds will veer southwesterly during the afternoon and gradually easing. The rain will clear northeastwards with scattered showers feeding in from the Atlantic. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees."

Thursday: "A mix of sunny spells with scattered showers for the morning but rain and drizzle will feed in from the west later in the day. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in moderate southerly winds, fresh at times. A humid night with temperatures barely decreasing with lows of 7 to 10 degrees in light to moderate southerly winds, freshening later as a further spell of heavy rain moves in from the west later in the night."

Friday: "A wet start to the day as rain crosses the country eastwards, clearing to showers in the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in mainly moderate southerly winds."

Weekend: "Remaining unsettled but becoming slightly cooler with highest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees."
