Ireland weather: Met Eireann confirm late blast of heat and one stunning day as temperatures soar

Temperatures are to hit as high as 20C on Monday as an unseasonable hot spell reaches Ireland.

Weather chiefs are forecasting unusually mild conditions for the next few days before it starts to get cold again.

It will feel like summer again on Monday as the mercury hits the 20C mark and most of the country will see dry, sunny weather.

The weekend itself will be extremely mild with temperatures in the teens - however, rain will hit many areas.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Mostly cloudy and misty in places this morning with patchy light rain and drizzle. Outbreaks of rain developing in the west from late morning will edge slowly eastwards over the country through the afternoon and evening, reaching the east coast after dark.

"Highest temperatures of 12 to 16 degrees in light southerly breezes, increasing moderate by afternoon and fresh on western coasts.

"Tomorrow, rain in northern and eastern areas will clear away through the morning. A good deal of dry weather elsewhere with some bright spells and just patchy light rain or drizzle, extending to all areas as the outbreaks of rain clear. Highest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees, mildest in the south with the best of the sunny spells. Light to moderate southwest winds will back southerly later.

"On Monday, outbreaks of rain will continue to move northeastwards, clearing from the southwest during the morning with some sunny spells developing with largely dry conditions in all areas by evening. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees, possibly reaching 20 degrees in parts of the southwest. Moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds will moderate during the afternoon and evening."

It will begin to get cooler next week as more seasonable weather returns but there is no suggestion of very cold conditions on the horizon yet.

The forecaster added: "Generally unsettled with rain and showers. Breezy or windy at times too. Mild initially but becoming cooler later next week."
