Ireland weather: Met Eireann address European heatwave as country braced for thunderstorms

The heat associated with a scorching European heatwave won't reach Ireland this week but associated thunderstorms will.

Met Eireann have said that while Ireland is "less warm" than mainland Europe with it's scorching heatwave, thunder and lightning will still make it this far.

Spain, France and Belgium are some of the countries with temperature warnings in place while Ireland makes do with near 20C heat.

The forecaster tweeted: "Heat over much of Europe, less warm over Ireland. Several heat warnings out for Europe. The heat sparking of thunderstorms, some of them also reaching Ireland."

15 counties are currently under a thunderstorm warning - they are all of Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal.

The warning will be in place until 8am on Tuesday morning as the thunder and lightning showers hit.

Temperatures will remain very high for the rest of the week albeit nowhere near the 40C heat being felt on the continent.

The mercury is forecast to soar as high as 24C on Tuesday and Wednesday in parts of Ireland.

A Met Eireann forecaster added: "Generally cloudy tomorrow morning, but sunny spells will develop through the afternoon and evening. Mostly dry, but some isolated showers will develop during the afternoon.

"Continuing warm with highest temperatures of 20 to 24 degrees, although slightly cooler near coasts as sea breezes develop. Otherwise, winds will be light and variable.

"Dry and mostly cloudy on Wednesday to start but brightening up during the afternoon with isolated showers possible. Warm again, with highest temperatures of 20 to 24 degrees in light northerly or variable breezes with sea breezes developing keeping coastal areas cooler."
