Ireland weather: Met Eireann 48-hour 'snow update' as ominous 'arctic airmass' blast warned

Met Eireann is forecasting a two-day snow warning in parts as a massive temperature swing hits Ireland.

Friday night and Saturday will see scattered rain, hail, sleet and snow showers in parts with temperatures dropping to as low as -4C on both nights as an arctic airmass returns to the country.

Met Eireann said: "We'll see a return to some unseasonably very cold weather this weekend, with an arctic airmass becoming re-established over the country.

"There'll be plenty of sunshine and northerly winds will be mostly light overall, but there'll be some wintry showers, with these most widespread across the country on Saturday.

"The showers will become more isolated on Sunday as pressure builds temporarily from the west. It will be extremely cold by night, with widespread sharp, locally severe, frosts."

Thursday will be breezy and cloudy with some bright intervals too with temperatures hitting 9C before dropping to 1C with rain and some frost.

Here's how the next two days are looking according to Met Eireann:

Tomorrow: "Friday, will bring plenty of sunshine and a scattering of showers, with some of these heavy and possibly of hail. Highest temperatures of 7 or 8 degrees, but turning colder later in the day. Winds will just be light to moderate north to northeasterly."

Friday night: Turning very cold on Friday night with temperatures dropping to between -4 to +2 degrees, and with a widespread sharp, locally severe, frost forming as winds will be mostly light and variable. Wind will be mostly moderate north to northeasterly in some coastal parts of the north and west. It will be dry in most places, though there'll be scattered rain, hail, sleet and snow showers in parts of the north and northwest, with a chance of thunder too.

Saturday: "It will be a cold, bright day with good spells of sunshine and it will be dry in many places to begin. There'll be some snow showers also, especially over the hills and mountains, but possibly even to some lower levels too in northern parts.

"There'll still be plenty of dry, bright weather around throughout the day and the showers will become more isolated later in the evening. Highest temperatures of 8C dropping to -4C again overnight."
