Ireland weather: Long range December forecast as expert predicts snow and white Christmas

Ireland's long-range forecast will see temperatures drop as a winter chill enters the air.

Popular weather app AccuWeather offers a detailed forecast for Dublin for the month of December, which gives us a hint as to what we can expect.

Daytime temperatures look set to be cool and in the single digits for most of the month, with largely dry and overcast days ahead.

The coldest nighttime temperatures are expected around Christmas week itself, with values dropping close to freezing on the night of the 25th.

National forecaster Met Eireann only offers forecasts for a maximum of seven days ahead, although they do agree the month will get off to a cold start.

Next week is when we will start to see a change, with "much colder" weather expected from Wednesday onwards.

Met Eireann said: "Monday will be mainly dry with some brighter weather for the morning in the south and east for a time, cloud in the northwest will bring outbreaks of rain there, otherwise a generally dry day once again with temperatures of 9 or 10 degrees in a moderate southwest wind, become fresh at times in the north. Little change in temperatures overnight as it remains cloudy but largely dry.

"Tuesday will be cloudy too and staying mostly dry with temperatures in the afternoon of around 10 degrees with light winds becoming westerly in direction.

"Current indications suggest little change to start Wednesday but there's a signal for much colder conditions to end the week."

Meanwhile famous Donegal postman Michael Gallagher has used his unconventional forecasting methods to make his big Christmas prediction.

He is known for making his long-term weather forecasts by observing the behaviour of plants and animals.

And on whether the snow will hit on Christmas Day, he told RSVP Live: "That's just one day, it's hard to be that exact about it.

"But I know there will be snow, and it will be close to Christmas Day. It will be there or thereabouts."

He added that there will be an East Wind, which is never a good sign.

"Any wind that you get from the east, that's a unhealthy wind and it brings a lot of flus and colds," he went on.

"It's a time when people should keep warm."
