Ireland weather: Highs of 28C before 'heavy thunderstorms' and 'severe downpours'

Enjoy the sunshine while you can as we’re headed for thunderstorms, rain and hail this evening.

Temperatures are set to soar to as high as a heavenly 28C in Leinster and Ulster with mostly clear skies.

And elsewhere, the mercury will hit highs of 22C to 25C.

But Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow alert ahead of thunderstorms this afternoon and night.

The forecaster said yesterday: “Heavy thunderstorms are expected to develop later on Thursday and Thursday night with some severe downpours, hail and spot flooding.

“Due to the localised nature of thunderstorms some parts of the country will remain dry.”

The warning is in place from 4pm today until 9am tomorrow.

Met Eireann added: “The risk of thunderstorms continues through tonight with Ulster most at risk. While many places will stay dry throughout, where thunderstorms do occur there's a risk of spot flooding and hail.

"Lowest temperatures will be between 11C and 14C degrees in the west and south of the country and will stay as high AS 17C or 18C through the night in Leinster and Ulster. Winds will continue light and variable in direction."

Meanwhile, the UK Met Office also issued a warning yesterday covering all six counties in the North.

It said: “Whilst many places will be dry or see little rain, thunderstorms may cause flooding and disruption in a few places.”

Tomorrow is expected to be cooler, with temperatures dipping to between 15C to 17C in the south and west but as high as 24C in the east and north.

There will be some heavy or prolonged showers, with Ulster particularly affected.

And it will be noticeably cooler again on Saturday with freshening westerly winds bringing showers and highest temperatures of 14C to 18C.

The outlook for the start of next week is for further unsettled weather.
