Ireland weather: 'Heavy falls' of rain to batter northwest with risk of flooding

The northwest and north face more torrential rain today after heavy showers yesterday.

Relentless downpours lead to river flooding in parts of the country on Sunday.

Two weather alerts were issued as Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim and Mayo were hit by 50-60mm of rain.

Met Eireann has since removed these alerts.

And in Northern Ireland, the UK Met Office issued a Status Yellow rainfall warning for Tyrone, Fermanagh and Derry.

A forecaster warned: "Further rain, heavy and persistent in places, may lead to some disruption."

It expires at 3pm today.

And Met Eireann is predicting more "heavy falls" of rain with a risk of flooding at times yet again today.

A spokesperson said: "A good deal of cloud about today with scattered outbreaks of rain, further heavy falls for a time in the northwest with a continued risk of flooding."

However, the rain will turn more showery in the afternoon.

"The best dry and sunny periods are expected to occur in north Ulster and also across parts of south Munster this afternoon.

"Many other areas will see just well scattered showers and brighter spells - the best of the sunny spells across the southwest", they added.

There will be highs ranging from 14C up to 17C in the south.
