Ireland weather: Grim conditions expected as Met Eireann pinpoints two areas to be hit with thunderstorm

The country is in for a spate of wet and windy conditions this week with lots of rain set to hit in the coming days.

Despite a relatively warm couple of days weather experts are warning that the sunny spells will be less frequent.

Plenty of heavy rain showers are set to arrive in the coming days with Met Eireann warning the south and west of the country.

The west is particularly likely to see some heavy rain with Connacht likely to see a spate of showers in the coming days.

However, Met Eireann has said Leinster will be hit with brutal conditions on Tuesday as thunderstorms and hail arrive throughout the day.

Oddly enough temperatures will remain relatively high throughout the week despite the grim conditions.

A forecaster said: "Scattered showers will continue to affect the south and west this morning, drier with sunny spells elsewhere. Further scattered showers will develop through the middle of the day, heaviest in Leinster and east Munster through the afternoon with the risk of hail and isolated thunderstorms.

"The best of the drier spells will be in the west. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees in light to moderate westerly breezes.

"Showery outbreaks of rain in Connacht and Ulster during the morning with sunny spells and isolated showers elsewhere. Parts of the midlands and east may remain mostly dry throughout. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees in moderate to occasionally fresh westerly winds.

"Becoming wet and windy on Wednesday night into Thursday before clearing to a cool showery west to northwest airflow for Friday and Saturday.

"Rain spreading from the southwest to all areas by morning. Light southerly or variable winds will become southeasterly and strengthen moderate to fresh and gusty with the arrival of the rain. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees.

"Thursday will be wet and windy with showery rain accompanied by fresh to strong and gusty southeasterly winds as gales develop along southern coasts.

"The showery rain will turn heavy and persistent at times. Some parts of the midlands and north may see the winds fall moderate cyclonic variable for a time later in the day. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees.

"On Thursday night it will remain mostly cloudy with showers or longer spells of rain continuing as the winds veer west to northwesterly becoming moderate to fresh, and gusty across the country. Remaining milder however with lowest temperatures of 8 to 10 degrees.

"Friday will be a cool, blustery day with scattered showers most frequent in the south and east where some will be heavy or possibly thundery at times. Coolest in the northwest with highest temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees in moderate to fresh and gusty northwesterly winds.

"Showers will clear the southeast early in the night with good clear spells developing over much of the country, leaving just the risk of an isolated shower along northern and northwestern coasts in mostly moderate northwesterly winds. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees.

Sunny spells and scattered showers on Saturday. Feeling cool in mostly moderate northwesterly winds and highest temperatures of just 10 to 13 degrees.

"Current indications are for it to remain cool with a band of rain to cross the country from the west on Sunday followed by scattered blustery showers for the early days of next week."
