Ireland weather: Freezing weekend ahead as Met Eireann predicts ice, sleet and snow in some areas

Break out the heavy coats again because sub-zero temperatures are on the way this weekend.

The mercury is expected to plummet to a teeth-rattling -4C in parts of the country tonight, leading into a cold weekend with spells of snow and sleet expected.

Today will be cold but sunny, with heavy showers expected along the Atlantic coast.

A Met Eireann advisory remains in place for all 26 counties until 11.59pm on Sunday.

It reads: “Turning colder from Wednesday with weather conditions becoming increasingly wintry for the rest of the week. Risk of frost and icy conditions, with falls of sleet or snow at times.”

Meanwhile weather experts are predicting more snow in the coming days and possibly even at the start of next week as a bitterly cold snap hits.

A forecaster said: “Friday night will be very cold with frost and icy patches developing.

“Some fog patches also. Most areas will be dry. However, wintry showers will continue in the northwest overnight. Lowest temperatures of -4 to 0 degrees.”

And tomorrow isn’t looking to be much different, with bitter cold and sunny spells expected.

There will be some snowy showers in in the west of the country which will move eastwards throughout the day.

The weather chiefs added: “Saturday will be cold with sunny spells. Much of the country will be dry. However wintry showers will affect the west and north. Highest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees with light westerly breezes.

“On Saturday night a band of rain, sleet and snow will move eastwards across the country.

“Frost and icy will develop as it the rain, sleet and snow gradually clear with lowest temperatures of -3 to 0 degrees.”

More of the same is expected on Sunday, with the snowy showers falling further east throughout the day while temperatures will dip to -3C in some places.

And looking into early next week, the cold snap will continue with wintry showers and low temperatures anticipated on Monday and Tuesday.
