Ireland weather: Country to be drenched in heavy rain as Met Eireann yellow alert comes into effect

The country is set to be lashed by heavy downpours of rain with a Status Yellow weather alert set to come into effect this morning.

The rainfall warning for Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim and Mayo was issued last night as Met Eireann warned of 25 to 35mm of rainfall and possible localised spot flooding.

The warning came into effect at 5am on Wednesday morning as is in place until 5pm this evening.

However the North West is not the only part of the country set to be drenched in rain as weather chiefs have predicted outbreaks of rain and drizzle all across Ireland.

A forecaster said: "Heavy falls are expected in places, mainly across the northern half of the country where there is a risk of spot flooding.

"It will become drier across much of Leinster and Munster for a time during this afternoon and early evening, before a further spell of rain moves in later this evening or early tonight.

"Highest temperatures of 17 to 22 degrees in moderate to fresh southerly winds with hill and coastal mist."

Tonight isn't looking much better either with scattered showers set to continue in the North West but outbreaks of rain will clear southeastwards.

Thursday's outlook is already better however with weather chiefs predicting a "bright day with sunny spells and scattered showers.

A forecaster added: "A largely fine and sunny evening is expected as the showers become isolated. Highest temperatures 16 to 19 degrees in moderate to fresh southwest breezes."
