Ireland weather: 14 counties under weather warning as up to 40mm of rain to fall

Fourteen counties are under a rainfall warning today as the southern half of Ireland is to be washed out.

Met Eireann issued the alert yesterday, warning there could be thunderstorms as rain is set to bucket down with localised flooding in south Leinster and Munster.

The caution is in place for all of Munster, as well as Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Wexford, Wicklow, Offaly and Galway.

The warning kicked in at 2am and will remain in place until 11.59pm tonight.

Up to 40mm of rain is expected to fall in some of these areas during the 22-hour period.

A Met Eireann spokesman warned: "Heavy, possibly thundery, rain at times overnight and during Monday with accumulations of 25 to 40mm in places. Localised flooding may occur."

They added: "Mostly cloudy this morning with patches of mist. Dry for a time in the northwest. Rain in the east and southeast will extend to most areas and continue through the day.

"It will be heavy and thundery at times with localised flooding, especially in Munster and south Leinster.

"Highest temperatures of 16C to 20C, with light northeast breezes."

Connacht and the midlands will be hit by the downpours tonight as the rain continues overnight with a risk of localised flooding.

However, there will be some relief for Munster as it will dry up.

It will be another warm night with lows of 11C to 14C.

Meanwhile, Tuesday looks set to be another rainy and cloudy day.

A forecaster revealed: "It will continue mostly cloudy over the northern half of the country with further spells of rain, which will gradually clear northwards in the afternoon and evening.

"It will be brighter further south with sunshine and showers, some heavy. Highest temperatures of 18C to 22C with light moderate southwest breezes."

The miserable conditions will continue on Wednesday as Met Eireann warned of a "band of rain" bringing showery and blustery conditions for the rest of the week.
