Ireland weather: 100km/h winds, heavy rain, thunder and flooding expected as Met Eireann issue three warnings

Ireland will be hit by 100km/h winds, thunder, heavy rain and flooding today as a week of miserable weather takes hold.

The whole country will be under a status yellow caution for most of the morning, with two different rain alerts in place, both of which were issued on Monday and will expire at 3pm.

But Met Eireann has also sent out another warning for extremely strong winds for Wexford, Cork, Kerry and Waterford.

It has been in force since 5am, and won't expire until 3pm later this afternoon.

It reads: "Becoming very windy on Tuesday. Southeast winds, veering southwest will reach mean speeds of 50-65km/h, gusting up to 100km/h.

"Exceptionally high tides combined with strong onshore winds gives an elevated risk of coastal flooding."

Speaking about the nationwide picture for the day, a forecaster said: "Blustery with some clear spells to start in northern parts. Windy in the south with showers or longer spells of rain.

"Rain will extend across the country, through morning, bringing heavy thundery downpours and a continued risk of localised flooding.

"Fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds will be strongest in the morning in southern and southeastern coastal counties, extending to eastern coastal counties as the day progresses. Highest temperatures of 11C to 14C.

(Colin Keegan, Collins Dublin)

"Drier conditions develop in many areas tonight although showery outbreaks of rain will continue in parts of the north and west.

"Lowest temperatures of 5C to 10C, coolest in the south and southeast, in southwesterly winds veering northwesterly or variable and easing mostly moderate overnight."

The rest of the week will see some respite with a few sunny spells, but Met Eireann has warned that "wet and blustery interludes will continue".
