Ireland vaccine update: Country to hit another huge milestone as 18-34 year olds receive jabs

Ireland has reached yet another incredible vaccine milestone with over 5 million doses set to be administered here.

The Covid-19 vaccine rollout has gathered incredible pace particularly in the last number of days due to the news that 18-34 year olds could now register for the singe shot Janssen vaccine from pharmacies.

On Wednesday HSE Chief Paul Reid said that over 100,000 doses had been administered this week.

And he revealed that by the end of today over 4.5 million doses will have been given out.

Taking to Twitter he said: "Over 100,000 further vaccines administered already this week with 51.5% of the adult population now fully vaccinated and over 69% had a Dose 1."

It comes as Ireland's race to get the population vaccinated before another wave of the virus hits with the Delta variant posing a number of risks.

The head of the HSE said there has been a significant increase in the number of people presenting for Covid-19 swabs.

Mr Reid on Tuesday said this is an “early alert” regarding the Delta variant as the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan has warned that Ireland is entering a fourth wave of the virus.

Mr Reid tweeted that 14,000 Covid-19 tests were carried out in communities on Monday - testing levels have not being this high since January 11.

He said swabbing is increasing by 30% week on week and has urged people to come forward for a test if symptomatic.

The HSE has set up walk-in test centres across the country and an appointment or a referral to get a free test is not needed.

People can book online or go to a test centre during opening hours for walk-ins but you can not book online for someone else unless you are booking for your child and they are under 16.
