Ireland Under-17s earn impressive win in Portugal

A last-minute Heidi Macken strike earned the Republic of Ireland under-17s a 1-0 win as they rounded off their week-long training camp in Portugal on a high note.

The Cork City defender scored with the last touch of the game as James Scott's side bounced back from a 3-1 defeat in the opening encounter with the hosts on Monday.

Peamount United keeper Claudia Keenan was kept busy early on as she watched an early shot bounce back off the crossbar before making a crucial save midway through the half.

Striker Lia O'Leary of Shelbourne produced Ireland's first chance of note as she pulled a shot just wide before the break.

Her Shels striker partner Abbie Larkin forced a save from Portuguese keeper Andreia Faria after the break as Ireland began to get on top.

Galway's Eve Dossen headed wide from a free kick before Treaty United's Michaeal Lawrence clipped the bar with a well-struck effort.

The game looked headed for a stalemate as the clock ticked past 90, but Macken pounced on a half-cleared ball and beat Faria from the edge of the box.

Shamrock Rovers midfielder Orlaith O'Mahony and Peamount defender Tara O'Hanlon started the game, while Shels' Leah Riley and DLR Waves' Joy Ralph came off the bench.
