Ireland U21 boss Stephen Kenny in Swedish hospital after falling ill

Ireland Under 21 boss Stephen Kenny has been in hospital in Sweden for two days after falling sick.

Kenny, 47, was on the sidelines as the Republic beat Sweden 3-1 on Tuesday evening but became unwell as the team headed home from the stadium in Kalmar.

He was admitted into a local hospital but the FAI have released a statement this afternoon, revealing that the Dubliner is expected to be discharged in the coming days.

The statement reads: "Republic of Ireland Under 21 boss Stephen Kenny has remained in Sweden after becoming unwell on Wednesday as his squad made their way home from Tuesday night’s European Championship qualifier in Kalmar.

"Stephen was examined by the FAI’s medical staff and decided to stay behind for treatment at a local hospital.

"Stephen expects to be discharged in the coming days and is looking forward to beginning preparations ahead of the two European Under-21 Championship qualifiers next month."

Former Dundalk boss Kenny was appointed the manager of Ireland's U21 side in November last year when it was also predetermined that he would take over the senior team from Mick McCarthy after Euro 2020.

His Ireland U21 side sit on top of their European Championship group after wining their opening three qualifiers.

They are next in action on 10 October when Kenny's outfit take on Italy at Tallaght Stadium before travelling to Iceland.
