Ireland travel: City break worry for Irish tourists as Amsterdam and more change Covid rules

Irish holidaymakers will be met with tightening Covid restrictions in European destinations after new rules were announced in some countries.

The Netherlands and Czech Republic have introduced tougher measures amid a surge of new cases.

The move means anyone taking a city break to Amsterdam or Prague will be forced to follow tighter guidelines.

And there are fears the countries could announce further measures if cases keep rising.

Stand-in Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte has reinstated an order to wear facemasks in shops, gyms, libraries and other indoor venues.

He has also announced an extension on the use of Covid-19 passes across the country.

The move comes after infections soared by 40% across Holland, while hospital admissions were up 31%.

Mr Rutte said: “It won't surprise anybody that we again have a tough message this evening. “Tough because we unfortunately have to ask more of people now that the infection numbers and hospital numbers are rising quickly.”

In Czech Republic, the number of new cases doubled in a week, leading the government to announce tougher measures.

Facemasks must now be worn at all indoor and outdoor mass events and Covid passes will be needed to gain access to venues from November 1st.

Czech leader Adam Vojtěch said venues are aware of the need for new measures.

He said: “I think they understand why we’re introducing this obligation. Because they are the places where community transmission can occur. This exists in other countries [already]."
