Ireland team to play England: Ross Byrne to make first Test start at number 10

Ross Byrne will make his first Test start at no 10 in Ireland's World Cup warm-up against England at Twickenham on Saturday.

It's a massive opportunity for Byrne, 24, to impress Joe Schmidt and book his place on the flight to Japan next month.

The Leinster star's only previous Test experience came in the November internationals last year, when he came off the bench against Italy in Chicago and against the USA in Dublin.

Johnny Sexton's first appearance of the season has been delayed, probably until next week's away fixture against Wales, and Jack Carty will provide out-half cover on the bench.

Sexton suffered soreness in Monday's training session in the Algarve and hasn't been risked as he makes his return after a thumb injury suffered at the beginning of pre-season.

With Joey Carbery ruled out for another four weeks following minor ankle surgery, Byrne and Carty could be fighting it out for more than just one spot in the final 31 man squad that Schmidt will confirm in early September.

Kicking and skills coach Richie Murphy said on Tuesday that Carbery is on course to make the opening pool game against Scotland on September 22.

But he added that the Munster out-half's inclusion could also depend on how Byrne and Carty perform in the upcoming games against England and Wales over the next three weekends.

Like Sexton, both Robbie Henshaw and Keith Earls also sat out Tuesday's session and will also have to wait for their season bow.

Otherwise Schmidt has named a strong line-up for Ireland's second warm-up Test before the finals and Conor Murray will be alongside Byrne in the half-backs.

Jean Kleyn given another chance to show his World Cup credentials in the second row after he made his debut in the 29-10 win over Italy almost a fortnight ago.

On that occasion he was partnered by Devin Toner but it is Iain Henderson who gets the nod to start this time.

Jordan Larmour, who played at full-back against the Italians, is named on the wing as Rob Kearney starts at no 15.

In the absence of Henshaw, Bundee Aki partners Garry Ringrose at centre and Jacob Stockdale also makes his season bow on the wing.

The team will be led by veteran hooker Rory Best.

IRELAND: R Kearney, J Larmour, G Ringrose, B Aki, J Stockdale, R Byrne, C Murray; C Healy, R Best, T Furlong, J Kleyn, I Henderson, P O'Mahony, J van der Flier, CJ Stander.

Subs: S Cronin, J McGrath, A Porter, D Toner, T Beirne, L McGrath, J Carty, A Conway.
