Ireland team news: Mick McCarthy expected to make no changes for Denmark

Mick McCarthy is expected to name the same starting team tonight that beat Georgia in March.

The manager has been dropping enough subtle clues since the squad met up in Portugal to suggest that will be the case.

On that occasion, Darren Randolph started in goal while Seamus Coleman, Shane Duffy, Richard Keogh and Enda Stevens made up the defence.

McCarthy deployed a three man midfield of Glenn Whelan, Conor Hourihane and Jeff Hendrick.

James McClean and Robbie Brady featured out wide and in support of lone striker David McGoldrick.

Whether that team can carry out the same job they did at home to Georgia away to Denmark is the question.

McCarthy, who has no fresh injury concerns, said: “Everyone who is playing is important in terms of holding onto the ball.

“For us to be able to build from the back or pass it in midfield, having ball retention is going to be vital.

“If we keep giving it back to them the more chances they’ll have in the game.

“But I know what they're good at, I know what they're not so good at. I know their strengths and weaknesses.

“Do I know where I want to bring on players if someone gets injured? Of course I do. Absolutely, no problem at all.”

And the Ireland boss raved about goalkeeper Darren Randolph, claiming he is an even better player than he first thought.

McCarthy added: “He saved us in Gibraltar with that save just after half-time before we scored.

“You watch them from afar, but only get to know them when you're coaching and managing them.

“I thought he was a good keeper but he's far better than I thought he was. He's excellent.”

REP OF IRELAND probable team: (4-3-3) Randolph; Coleman, Duffy, Keogh, Stevens; Hendrick, Whelan, Hourihane; Brady, McGoldrick, McClean.
