Ireland stopper Darren Randolph 'hopeful' of being fit for crunch Euro qualifier against Denmark

Darren Randolph is ‘hopeful’ of being fit for Ireland’s all-important Euro qualifier against Denmark.

The Middlesbrough goalkeeper is sidelined with a thigh strain and is facing between two and four weeks out having missed his club’s last two games.

Ireland host the Danes at Aviva Stadium in just under three weeks but Randolph will be in the squad when it is named by Mick McCarthy tomorrow.

McCarthy said today: “Darren is hopeful at this point in time.

“The Denmark match is three weeks away still and Darren is confident that he has enough time on his side to get over the injury.”

Shane Duffy and Glenn Whelan did not play for Brighton or Hearts over the weekend but are not injury doubts.

McCarthy added: “Glenn was left out of the Livingston game to rest him with Hearts playing so many games at present.

“And I spoke to Shane and he missed the Everton game as a precaution. He got a kick on his calf in training.

“They felt it was better not to take a chance on involving him for that one but he says he will be fine for us.”

McCarthy was at that Brighton win over Everton and the Ireland boss was impressed with Ireland newcomer Aaron Connolly.

Connolly made his senior Ireland debut off the bench in the recent draw with Georgia and then started the defeat to Switzerland.

McCarthy said: “Aaron did really well again for Brighton in a striker role.

“It was the sort of game where he didn’t get a lot of the ball but everything that he did do was very good.

“He won the penalty for their second goal just before he went off by getting right in behind the defender.
