Ireland star Shane Duffy says it's time to make dad Brian proud following his passing

Ireland and Brighton star Shane Duffy thanked those who have rallied around him following the death of his father Brian aged 53.

Letterkenny, Co Donegal native Brian sadly passed away suddenly at his home in Derry on Monday.

Duffy, 28, paid a touching tribute to his 'hero' earlier this week and vowed to make his dad proud today while thanking people for their messages of support.

Tweeting today, he said: "The past few days been the toughest of my life losing my dad I just want to say thank you for all the messages and love everyone has shown towards him and our family we all appreciate it now time to make him proud !"

Brian had three children, sons Shane and Tony, and daughter Nicola.  He is also survived by his wife, Siobhan, sisters Jackie and Michelle, and brother Mark.

Ireland boss Stephen Kenny was among those to send his support and sympathies to the Duffy family.

He said: “Our thoughts are with Shane and his family at this very sad time.

"Brian was very proud of his son, a proud football fan and a huge supporter of the Foyle Harps club in Derry where Shane played his underage football alongside Patrick McEleney and where Paddy McCourt learned the game.

“My own son Eoin played for Harps up to two years ago and I know just how central to the Galliagh community the club is.

"Brian’s loss will be felt by everyone at Foyle Harps and in Galliagh but none of us can comprehend what Shane and his family are going through now. We can only offer our support and sympathies.”

Former team-mates and legends of Irish football also threw their support behind the Duffy family.

Brian had been an avid follower of the Boys in Green and had regularly travelled to watch his son in action for his country.

Robbie Keane said: "So sorry to hear that Shane I’m thinking off you and the family."

Paul McGrath commented: "Sorry for your loss Shane, condolences to all the family. RIP Brian."

John O'Shea said: "Sorry for your loss Shane , thinking of you and the family. RIP."

Enda Stevens posted: "Sorry to hear that bud. Thinking of you and your family."
