Ireland star Ronan Curtis bans his mother from Twitter after series of rows

Ireland star Ronan Curtis has banned his mother from social media after her questioning the weight of his teammate led to an online backlash.

Curtis's mum Marie has regularly tweeted her strong opinions on Portsmouth FC since her son joined them from Derry City in the summer of 2018.

But fans thought she took to it far recently when, referring to the club's forward Brett Pitman, she asked: "Has Pitts put on weight or is it just TV?"

This generated some angry responses from Portsmouth supporters with Marie later apologising to Pitman for the comment.

Using a tearful emoji, she tweeted: "I'd like to apologise if you found my tweet offensive. I didn't mean any harm in it but I've always been told TV makes you look twice the size."

This was far from the only time that Marie has voiced her opinion on the team.

She recently questioned Pompey manager Kenny Jackett for picking Anton Walkes in midfield instead of another fan favourite, Andy Cannon.

Jackett has admitted he is aware of Marie's strong opinions but doesn't give it much attention.

He said: "I've got no real comment on this particular situation, other than of course it's been mentioned.

"Anyway, social media is what it is and everyone is entitled to their opinion on it. That's just how it is.

"You can't get worried about these things. Opinions are opinions and they are out there on social media."

Marie also often responds to supporters who have criticised her son's performance on the pitch.

And her latest Twitter spat has forced her son Ronan, 23, who was born in England but raised in St Johnston, Co Donegal, to ban her from the social media platform.

Her last tweet said: "Sorry folks my son has barred me from Twitter."

But lots of Portsmouth fans, entertained by her tweets, have urged her to keep venting her views, adding #freemarie to their posts.

Her son Ronan has been a hit at Fratton Park since moving to the League One club and has been pushing for a starting spot for Ireland.

He made his debut for the Boys in Green in November 2018 in a 0-0 draw against Northern Ireland.
