Ireland star Jeff Hendrick sees red as nine-man Newcastle hold off Southampton

Ireland midfielder Jeff Hendrick was sent off this afternoon as Newcastle battled to a 3-2 win over Southampton.

The Dubliner saw red just minutes into the second-half, picking up a second yellow card for a challenge on Saints attacker Takumi Minamino.

The Magpies flew to a 2-0 lead inside the opening first 30 minutes thanks to Miguel Almiron and Joe Willock's strikes before Minamino pulled a goal back.

But a second from Almiron before half-time was cancelled out by a stunning James Ward-Prouse free-kick just seconds before Hendrick's dismissal.

Newcastle went down to nine men after defender Fabian Schar went off injured, but they held on to take three points in a tense finale.

Hendrick's Ireland and Newcastle teammate Ciaran Clark missed out on the game as he prepares to become a father.

Clark's partner went into labour yesterday, and the 31-year-old left his teammates to be by her side.

However, Newcastle boss Steve Bruce was hopeful that he could return in time after the baby is born.

"Ciaran Clark's partner has gone into labour but we’re hoping he’ll still make it," Bruce said yesterday.

"We hope she produces a healthy baby this morning or this afternoon so he can get himself ready for the game."

Clark has been a regular under Bruce, and recently signed a contract extension to keep him at the club until 2023.
