Ireland star David Meyler's wife gives birth to baby after series of miscarriages

Ireland star David Meyler was overjoyed today after his wife gave birth to their second child after a series of miscarriages.

The Corkman and his wife Cally have a daughter called Alanna, who was born in 2016, but the couple then suffered three miscarriages in a short space of time.

It left the footballer considering quitting the sport after the agonising losses "took their toll".

He said last year: “There’s no point beating around the bush, at one stage last season I wanted to finish with football."

But the 29-year-old, who is the son of Cork hurling manager John Meyler, beamed today as he held their newborn child beside brave mother Cally in the hospital.

He tweeted: "Honestly words can’t describe how emotional I am writing this post. Cally you are one hell of a women.

"After Alanna what you went through physical and emotional it’s all been worth it to get to this point in our lives. We all love you so much."

Meyler should have plenty of time to spend time with the new arrival as a dislocated shoulder has ruled him out for the rest of the season.

The midfielder is on loan at Coventry City from Reading and will be hoping to force his way into the plans of new Ireland boss Mick McCarthy in the coming year.
