Ireland star Conor Murray 'feeling great' ahead of third World Cup

Playing in a third World Cup, Conor Murray could be forgiven for feeling like he's getting on a bit.

And even if that stat doesn't, the fact that he is the only backline survivor from the 2015 quarter-final loss to Argentina who will start against Scotland in tomorrow's pool opener in Yokohama might have given him pause to reflect.

That's not really his style. Murray ploughs on regardless, and Ireland supporters are praying he can returns to his best form after a neck injury kept him from soaring last year.

"We had a few injuries the last time we played a Rugby World Cup game," stated the Munster scrum-half.

"So a few lads to come back in (still) and a few lads who have come into the squad and done really well and made an impression. It's quite a settled squad that we have."

Settled, but with new-ish elements. Eight of Ireland's starters this weekend, and all of the replacements, will be making their World Cup debut this time.

"It's a different group from 2015," Murray stressed. "I've talked about it before the World Cup, the last four years and what we have done and the results we have had...it would be foolish of us now to start talking about 2015 within the group.

“Our focus is obviously on Scotland, what we can achieve as a team and how we can achieve it.

"We know how good we can be when we perform and are on song. There is plenty of confidence and belief in each other that we can go out and do a job if we get things right."

He saw enough in the pre-season and warm-up games, despite the hammering by England, to be excited about what's to come.

"I feel great," Murray said. "We had a great pre season, worked really hard.

"I was really disappointed with my first game back with the defeat to England but that was just one of those things you can’t really explain.

"I felt really sharp against England going into that game and played about 30 minutes before going off for that HIA and not returning, so that was frustrating from my end, that I didn’t get to play a good chunk of that match.

"I obviously missed out the next week against Wales and came back and got 70 odd minutes against Wales at home so I’m feeling really good.

"We kind of kicked on and got a bit of confidence going so it was really important that we left Ireland with a decent performance.

"That wasn’t the most exciting game but it was good, solid Test match performance from us. We’ve built on that now, hopefully."

Although he's been around a long time at Test level, since he was Ireland's World Cup bolter in New Zealand in 2011, it still came as a surprise that the Corkman recently celebrated his 30th birthday.

But nothing's changed.

“Someone said it to me recently, that it was my third World Cup, but I hadn't thought about it," he insisted.

"No, it's just been next game, next competition.

"It's cool. The first one I snuck in there quite late with the end-of-season run with Munster and really enjoyed it.

"The last World Cup we had really big plans and this feels a bit different. The squad is more settled and I go back the last four years again, to what we have gone through.

"I'm eager to get out and see what kind of performance we can put together cos it is really exciting. It's a group of players that have been through an awful lot together.

"It's a huge game. Massive game. Scotland will be so well prepped, they are a really good side.

"They don't go away easily and it is a huge opening game".
