Ireland star Callum Robinson completes move to Sheffield United for club record fee

Ireland international Callum Robinson has today joined Sheffield United for a club record fee.

It is believed the Blades shelled out over £7 million for the forward who has signed a four-year deal with the promoted Premier League club.

Fellow top flight new boys Norwich City had also been  linked with the former Preston North End attacker.

Robinson joins fellow Irish internationals Enda Stevens, David McGoldrick and John Egan at Bramall Lane.

Blades boss Chris Wilder said today: "Callum fits into our structure perfectly as we look to Championship players who we feel can be successful at Premier League level.

"He's someone who was on our radar a number of years ago and has progressed how we thought he would and hopefully there’s plenty more to come.

"I feel Callum is a great age and what we have paid represents great value in the current market."

Robinson was in Cork this week for a pre-season training camp with Preston but was given permission to conduct a medical with Sheffield United.

He has since flown to Portugal to join up with the Blades in pre-season but won’t feature in tonight’s clash with Real Betis.

Preston North End boss Alex Neil said he was “gutted” to lose Robinson but felt the deal made financial sense.

“We’re in a situation where we’ve been given a good offer,” he said today. “If he walked away for nothing at the end of the season, that wouldn’t have been good business sense.

“Callum has seen his future in the Premier League if that opportunity came along, which it did, and we had to try and maximise the cash intake for us.”

Neil continued: “I’m gutted Callum has left. He was a great lad about the place, but he has deserved his chance and he has worked very hard for a couple of seasons.

“He has improved no end; he has been a double figure goalscorer for us for the last few seasons and we should remember him fondly and wish him all the best.”
