Ireland squad Covid free ahead of flight to Serbia for World Cup qualifier

The Republic of Ireland squad is Covid-19 free ahead of today’s flight to Serbia for Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier.

All players and staff were tested at their temporary training base in Manchester yesterday.

And all of the results today have returned negative in a timely boost for manager Stephen Kenny.

Kenny’s preparations for games last year were rocked by confirmed Covid cases and other players missing out as close contacts.

He is already dealing with an injury crisis ahead of Wednesday’s opening qualifier in Belgrade and Saturday’s home clash with Luxembourg.

Caoimhin Kelleher, Conor Hourihane, Callum O’Dowda and Kevin Long were all ruled out yesterday.

And Darren Randolph, John Egan, James McCarthy and Harry Arter were already sidelined while James McClean and Aaron Connolly still have to prove their fitness.

So the negative batch of Covid results was at least one timely boost for Kenny ahead of a key week.

Ireland are training in Manchester this morning ahead of the afternoon flight to Serbia where they will train tomorrow night at the match stadium.
