A viral fanpage of the Simpsons has announced it is setting up a political party.
In news that seems somewhat unbelievable, Ireland Simpsons’ Fans set up the new website today, claiming to be a political party for those who don’t feel represented by the current Irish government.
While their homepage features a multitude of Simpsons’ references, there is some seriousness behind the page.
Speaking to Dublin Live, Jack Leahy told us that the idea of a meme page becoming a political party isn’t beyond belief anymore.
Leahy, who is one of the founders, said: “We are genuinely intending to register and have easily exceeded the number required.
“Politics is changing and the idea of a Simpsons meme party honestly is no longer even a little crazy.
“I think it’s crazy that nearly 600 people would join a meme party this quickly.
“We always knew that working with such a big group would ensure a level of success for the concept anyway.
“But mostly it’s because the group is full of 18-35 year olds who are expressing their political homelessness this way.
“I think that’s a major indictment of political parties.”
Current legislation says that to register as a party, it must meet certain criteria.
These include having at least 300 recorded members over the age of 18 and have at least one member who is a member of the Dail or a representative of the European Parliament.
However, unregistered parties are entitled to fight elections but the party’s name will not appear on the ballot paper.
At the time of writing, the ISF Party Twitter page has over 8000 followers - more than both Aontu and Renua.
Finn Harps FC have given their endorsement to the page, taking to Twitter to support them.
They said: "We usually stay well away from politics, but your ideas are intriguing to us, and we wish to subscribe to your newsletter."
Ireland Simpsons Fans was set up in 2016, with thousands of followers posting screenshots from the classic animated series with captions relating them to current events, or posting their own Simpsons captions.
