Ireland set to have the warmest day of the year with temperatures to hit 25C

The warmest string of days this year are set to start tomorrow with temperatures of 25C predicted.

While Thursday is shaping up to be the hottest day, today will be hot and mostly dry.

Met Eireann said: “Most places will hold dry with spells of warm sunshine developing through the afternoon and evening.

“A humid day, but a little cooler along northern and eastern coasts in the onshore light to moderate northeasterly breezes, which will freshen along southern and western coasts later in the day.

Thursday will be warmer again as the mercury soars to a scorching 27C - but an “isolated thunderstorm” may hit the southwest.

Friday will be another hot and humid day with highs ranging from 20C and 27C.

However, Met Eireann says there is also “potential for thundery downpours to develop in these areas later in the day”.

It’s a different story across Europe though, as it is hit with a full blown heatwave caused by hot air from the Sahara Desert.

Temperatures will soar across the entire continent to “potentially dangerous” levels.

Highs up to a scorching 40C have been predicted in Paris where authorities have issued an orange alert for intense heat.

Extra precautions are being put in place as national weather agency Meteo-France has placed 53 counties on the warning with exams also postponed from Thursday and Friday.

French news stations report that authorities have organised designated “cool places” for the vulnerable population, consisting of air-conditioned public places and parks.

Paris-based charities have been handing water to homeless people on the streets of the French capital.

French President Emmanuel Macron has urged people to keep an eye on those who might be more vulnerable to the heat.

He said: “As you know, at times like these, sick people, pregnant women, infants and elderly people are the most vulnerable.

“So we must be vigilant with them and have prevention measures in place in order to intervene as quickly as possible.”

The German national record could be smashed with the mercury expected to rise to 40C while Spain may see a blistering 42C.

Silvia Laplana, a meteorologist for Spanish broadcasters RTVE, declared “hell is coming”.

Italy will also see temperatures rise to 40C while Switzerland has issued a red alert for temperatures.
