Ireland scams: Tech expert highlights danger of fake Bank of Ireland texts

A leading technology expert has highlighted the danger of fraud texts by showing what happens when you click one of the links which supposedly comes from Bank of Ireland.

CSO crime statistics for Q1 of 2021 show there was a 40% increase in fraud offences in Ireland in the year to June 2021 compared to the previous year.

The increase mostly occurred in Q1 and Q2 of this year and primarily relates to fraudulent attempts to obtain personal or banking information online or by phone as well as fraudulent use of credit and debit card information.

A good portion of these were people pretending to be calling or messaging from a bank.

This has led many institutions to stop sending texts altogether, instead asking for users to clarify a push notification.

This hasn't stopped scammers though, with a new Bank of Ireland scam doing the rounds.

Jess Kelly, a technology correspondent with Newstalk, highlighted just how dangerous these could be in a thread on Saturday.

She posted a video of what happens when you do click on one of these links - where the "bank" asked her for three digits of her pin.

No matter what digits you enter, you will be asked for the other three, thus letting fraudsters into your account.
