Ireland scams: Gardai warn Bank of Ireland customers of two big signs texts are fake

Gardai are advising the public to "think before you click" as fraudsters persist in targeting people through a range of elaborate scams.

People continue to be contacted by scammers pretending to be from financial institutions, delivery companies and government departments.

Thousands of people have been caught out already this year by fraudsters trying to part them with their hard-earned cash or personal information.

In a new update, gardai issued advice to Bank of Ireland customers about how to spot fraudulent text messages.

Members of the force in the Cavan/Monaghan division outlined two big differences that people should look out for when they receive a message purporting to be from the bank.

Gardai posted two screenshots of text messages received by the same person "from the same Bank of Ireland thread".

The first message, received in May 2020, is a genuine text from the bank.

However, the second communique sent this year on Monday, November 15, is from scammers.

Gardai explained how to spot which message is genuine and the clear giveaways that the texts are not from the institution they claim to be.

They said: "Fraudsters can use the same thread as the one on which genuine Bank of Ireland texts are sent.

"The two big differences are there is no link in the genuine text and the BOI never look for your personal information.

"This can be said of any company or financial institution - courier, service provider etc.

"Please never click on these links and delete the text. Think before you click."
