Ireland scams: Gardai issue warning about new scam that's targeting people's finances

Gardai have issued a warning after a recent increase in invoice redirect fraud.

Authorities in the Cavan and Monaghan Garda Division said there were two recent incidents of invoice redirect fraud reported.

In terms of the methodology that's used, this fraudulent technique involves a scammer sending an email to a business purporting to be from a supplier.

The email will state that this person's bank account number has changed and the message will ask them to send money that's owed to a new account.

In a warning that was posted online, Gardai said: "The scammer has spoofed an email address which looks very similar to the original or has taken over the business's email account."

However, the authorities also provided the following three pieces of advice to help protect the public.

* If such a request is received, please check with the company in question by telephone to a familiar employee - don't use contact details contained on the invoice.
* Please inform all of your relevant employees of this type of fraud as unfortunately, your company could be at the loss of thousands euros.
* If you are a victim of this or any type of fraud, please report it to your local Garda Station.
