Gardai have issued an urgent warning this morning after discovering the latest scam targeting thousands across Ireland.
People are reportedly receiving text messages where fraudsters are pretending to be from Permanent TSB, and are reporting unusual activity on their accounts.
In a statement, gardai warn: “The Garda National Economic Crime Bureau (GNECB) are warning the public of a recent smishing scam where persons are receiving text messages purporting to be from Permanent TSB advising of 'unusual activity' or a 'suspicious log-in attempt' on their account.”
Once the recipient clicks on the link they will be brought to a website that looks exactly like a normal banking site, where the criminals will ask for your pins, passcodes, and other personal information so they can gain access to your account.
“The fraudsters want your personal data so they can steal money from your bank account or purport to be you when contacting banks.”
The warning reminds the public to never click on a link of an unsolicited text, email or respond to cold callers seeking personal information.
If you receive a message and are unsure if it is legitimate, you can contact your bank to confirm whether or not there has been suspicious activity on your account.
Never give away personal data like PIN numbers, card numbers, passwords, one-time codes, PPS numbers.
