Ireland scams: Garda warning for AIB and Bank of Ireland customers over new trick

AIB and Bank of Ireland customers are being warned about new scams bombarding inboxes all over the country.

BOI customers, and some that aren't even with the bank, are receiving messages asking them to answer three security questions.

The text message, which says it's from 'BOI', then adds a link that customers should NOT click through to.

It reads: "Following the recent increase in fraudulent transactions all members are required to add 3 security questions for extra security."

While AIB customers are also being told to avoid such tricks with more clever schemes hitting them in recent days.

A garda spokesperson said on social media: "Please continue to be alert to ongoing scams, the latest sent to us by vigilant member of public, this appeared to be a genuine message from the bank. However your bank will never contact you this way. If in doubt, call in or ring your bank via a known phone number and not the number on the text."

AIB have listed the following three rules when receiving a text from your bank;

  • NEVER disclose your Registration Number or Personal Access Code (PAC) or Card information after clicking a link in a text
  • NEVER generate codes from your AIB Card Reader that is requested from a test message.
  • NEVER divulge your One Time Passcode (OTP) for Card transactions.
