Ireland scams: Fraudsters using sly trick to get Bank of Ireland details

Fraudsters have been using a new trick to try and steal people's bank account details.

They have sent texts to members of the public claiming impersonating Bank of Ireland, saying they have noticed unusual activity on the bank account and ask them to click on a link to "prevent a block being placed."

Then, to make the scam more believable, another text is sent with a code to "confirm" access for a new device to your bank account.

They say at the end of the text: "Didn't request a code? Please contact BOI immediately", which incites people to click on the earlier link to "prevent a block".

An Garda Siochana have issued a warning about this scam and urged the public to report fraud attempts like this to them.

They advised the public to "never click on a link of an unsolicited text, email or respond to cold callers seeking personal information."

They also said people should not reply to the number or call any number supplied on the texts.

Gardai also warned the public to never "give away personal data like PIN number, card numbers, passwords, one time codes, PPS numbers."

If you have responded to such a text or paid the scammers, gardai say you should contact your bank immediately.

They said: "It is also important to report the matter to your local Garda Station."
