Ireland scam alert as Gardai warn of fraudsters impersonating banks

Gardai have warned people to be on high alert for fraudsters pretending to be Irish banks.

The latest scam comes in the form of a text message flagging unusual activity on a person's account.

The text urges the person to click a link to prevent their bank account from being blocked, with a code then being sent to the user.

An Garda Siochana tweeted: "An Garda Síochána is aware of a text message being received by people which appears to be from their bank."

They also provided guidelines on what to do if you receive a text like this one.

Their advice is as follows:

• Never click on a link of an unsolicited text
• Never give away personal data like PIN number, card numbers, passwords, one time codes
• Banks would never request a customer return a card to the bank in such circumstances
• Be very wary of cold calls – just because the number looks Irish does not mean it is – fraudsters use VOIP numbers
• If you are concerned hang up and ring your bank/service provider from a number advertised in the phone book or on your bill
• If you are expecting a delivery and receive such a text, be very careful. Contact the delivery service

The guards are advising people not to respond to these texts, to screenshot them, delete them and report it to their bank and local Garda station.
