Ireland scam alert as fraudsters imitate gardai in devious con

An Garda Siochana have issued phone scam advice to the public with fraudulent calls continue to catch people out, with the latest claiming to be from garda stations.

Gardai from Santry have reported a significant increase in "cold calling / phishing scams" linked to mobile phone numbers starting with the 083 prefix.

Callers report that they have received or missed calls from Santry Garda Station on 016664400 shortly followed by a prerecorded message looking for PPS numbers or reporting fraudulent activity on their bank accounts.

The guards explained the tricky phone scams and what to do if you think you have fallen victim to one of these calls.

They warn that there are several stages to these carefully planned scams.

It starts with a call that appears to be from a genuine garda station.

If you receive a call, please be advised that Gardai will never ask you for a PPS number or any information linked to your personal bank account.

Please do not engage with anyone seeking this information.
