Ireland's World Cup training squad winners and losers as Joe Schmidt names 44-man panel

Joe Schmidt has named Ireland's 44-man squad for a summer training camp ahead of the World Cup.

The Kiwi will gather his troops in mid-June before the Guinness Summer Series and start of the World Cup in September.

Here's which players were winners and losers from the announcement:

Winners

Mike Haley (Munster)

Didn't have the impact he would have liked following his move from Sale to Munster last summer, but his versatility could make him an asset.

Jean Kleyn (Munster)

Eligible to play for Ireland from August 8 so available for all four warm-up Tests. The South African second row would add a serious lineout game and real ballast.

Jordi Murphy (Ulster)

Might eventually have made the final squad cut anyway, but Sean O'Brien's injury left Joe Schmidt without the potential headache of selecting between the two.

Tommy O'Donnell (Munster)

Last of his dozen Ireland caps came against Scotland in the 2016 Six Nations. Brings experience and back row nous. Could yet force his way into contention.

Losers

Stuart McCloskey (Ulster)

The big centre had a big season for Ulster, helping the province reach the Champions Cup last eight and PRO14 last four but wasn't selected for Six Nations.

Quinn Roux (Connacht)

Perhaps counting the cost of the lineout breakdown in Rome in the Six Nations but was ill as the season ended and could still be called in.

Jamison-Gibson Park (Leinster)

Eligible for Ireland in June but had recently said he wasn't expecting a call-up - yet, at least. Scrum-half stocks already well-piled.

Tom Farrell (Connacht)

Perhaps most exciting backline player in Ireland this season. Trained at Carton House during Six Nations, but deemed not experienced enough at this stage.

Will Addison (Ulster)

Looked a serious Test prospect when making his first three Ireland appearances in November. Injury has held him back but may yet sneak in.

Simon Zebo (Racing 92)

Was never a live option after his move abroad and his X Factor will be missed unless there is a freak amount of injuries. Ian Madigan and Donnacha Ryan are similarly exiled.
