Ireland's World Cup preparations continue as Joe Schmidt leaves out two stars from squad

Ultan Dillane and Rory Scannell have been left out of Joe Schmidt's plans for Ireland's opening World Cup warm-up against Italy at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday (2pm).

The two have returned to Connacht and Munster respectively as Schmidt has named a provisional 43-man squad for the first of four warm-ups ahead of the World Cup in Japan next month.

Johnny Sexton is included in the squad despite a thumb injury that might keep him sidelined until week two or three of the warm-up games, which also include an away game against England and home and away meetings with Wales.

Ireland have resumed training at Carton House having been at the IRFU's new training set-up in Abbotstown, and having previously worked at camps in Galway and Limerick during an extensive five-week pre-season series.

After the Italy game, Schmidt will take his squad to Portugal from Wednesday week for an eight-day training camp, before facing England at Twickenham on August 24.

There will be a fitness update from Schmidt's management team tomorrow.
