Ireland's travel rule changes from Monday as country begins major reopening

The country is just days away from seeing one huge raft of Covid-19 restrictions being eased.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin last week laid out the country's plans to ease lockdown over the coming weeks and into the summer in an address to the nation.

On Tuesday, the first restrictions were lifted with all construction workers returning to work in full for the first time in months.

And in just a week's time on May 10, the people of Ireland will again get to enjoy a raft of freedoms which we haven't for many months.

There is one major sector that will see a welcome return - travel.

The official Government advice laid out on gov.ie says that two rules are being relaxed from 10 May.

You can travel between counties in Ireland

This time last month, we saw the removal of the five kilometre limit that had been in place since Christmas.

That was a massive relief to thousands of people who were then able to travel around their county and visit nearby relatives.

From next week though, we'll be able to go further.

That's because inter-county travel is now back on the cards from May 10.

On the same day, a maximum of three households or six people from any number of households can visit a private garden.

So if you fancy taking a trip down to the Cliffs of Moher, or heading out to the Howth Cliff Walk, you can from Monday.

And in order to help out with the travel...

Public transport will run at 50 percent capacity

Since level five was brought in, the cap on the number of people allowed on public transport was set at 25%.

But that doubles on Monday - with some providers saying they'll return to full capacity.

You can also travel between counties in Ireland to your stationary mobile home or caravan. This is only allowed if you are the owner of the mobile home or caravan.

What about foreign travel?

Irish tourists could look forward to a holiday abroad in the coming months as plans emerge for a return to foreign travel.

The EU commission has been proposing plans for a return of non-essential travel within the union as the vaccine rollout ramps up across Europe.

And Ireland is set to take part in the discussions this week that could pave the way for the return to foreign holidays very soon.

Non-essential travel abroad has been off the cards in Ireland for well over a year as countries across the globe wrestle with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Currently the Irish government is still advising against all non-essential travel abroad.

There was no mention of the return of holidays during the Taoiseach's announcement last week where he confirmed the easing of a raft of Covid-19 restrictions.

However that could soon change as the EU examines a way for people to travel within Europe again.

The prospect of a passport system has been suggested before.
