Ireland's summer tour of Australia in doubt due to coronavirus pandemic

Ireland's summer tour of Australia has been thrown into doubt due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Andy Farrell's men were scheduled to face the Wallabies on July 4 in Brisbane and July 11 in Sydney, but a near-worldwide shut down of rugby this month to curb the outbreak may get in the way of plans.

With PRO14 and Champions Cup seasons suspended and reportedly set to be completed deep into the summer months, the tour down under could be axed.

Reports in Australia say that there have been no formal discussions between the IRFU and Rugby Australia about cancelling the tour.

But with the shut down of rugby and other sports expected to last beyond the initial Irish government's suggested March 29 date, all international rugby in the summer could be cancelled.

The Australian government have also imposed an indefinite travel ban and are likely to place restrictions on mass gatherings in response to the outbreak.

It would be another financial hit to Irish Rugby, With the IRFU and the provinces already set to lose out on almost €3 million due to the Six Nations and Champions Cup postponements.

The Rugby Players Ireland have suggested that the players are willing to play into the summer if it means they can complete the 2019/20 season, if public health restrictions are relaxed.
