Ireland's summer lockdown reopening timeline - NPHET meeting, Cabinet decision and Taoiseach announcement

Ireland is looking forward to a gradual summer reopening as lockdown measures continue to ease.

A roadmap for the coming weeks and months is expected to emerge later this week.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin will hold an address to the nation where we will learn what restrictions are due to change on May 4, and what the rest of the summer will hold.

The five areas under review for May 4 are currently understood to be the full reopening of construction, the phased return of personal services, religious services and non-essential retail, and the reopening of museums and galleries.

Inter-county travel looks set to return in either late June or July as staycations are due to be a big feature of our summer, and pubs may also have to wait until mid-summer.

While April 26 marks another big step in the road to normality as the latest tweaks are made to Ireland's current lockdown.

Outdoor non-contact sports such as golf and tennis, as well as all underage sport, are returning today.

And outdoor attractions such as zoos, petting farms and heritage sites are also reopening on Monday.

While the maximum attendance at funerals has now been increased to 25

Here is everything you need to know about Ireland's lockdown timeline:

NPHET meeting

The first major step of the process will see the National Public Health Emergency Team meeting on Wednesday.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan will bring public health recommendations before the country's leading politicians to advise them on our next steps.

Dr Holohan had said last week that NPHET "is a little concerned" about a sharp rise in cases following an easing of restrictions earlier this month.

He explained that the battle against Covid-19 is going in the right direction but the level of the virus is still high in Ireland.

He said: "We are not yet where we need to be."

A spike of cases in the past few days and a slight rise in Covid-19 admissions to hospital and intensive care "give us reason to be cautious".

He added: "We need to examine if these are to become more permanent or transitory."

Cabinet decision

The first meeting of the Cabinet Covid-19 sub-committee is expected on Wednesday, where the Taoiseach, Tanaiste and other senior ministers discuss the key lockdown changes.

They are then set to bring their recommendations before a full Cabinet meeting on Thursday where they will be signed off.

Taoiseach announcement

The final step in the process will be when Taoiseach Micheal Martin makes an address to the nation on Thursday evening outlining the new plans.

This is when Government will formally reveal what restrictions will be adopted on May 4 and for the summer months ahead.

While the phased return of a number of sectors including personal services and non-essential retail is expected next month, the outlook for June and July is unlikely to have specific dates.

The hospitality and travel sectors are almost certainly going to be asked to wait until mid-summer, but an exact reopening date is unlikely to be confirmed.
