Ireland's Oscar nominees enjoy luncheon with Hollywood's elite

An Cailin Ciuin director Colm Bairead joined Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan, Kerry Condon, Martin McDonagh, Brendan Gleeson and Paul Mescal at the Oscars luncheon surrounded by some of Hollywood’s elite.

The Oscar-nominated director attended the annual event at The Beverly Hilton in California, with over 150 Oscar nominees up for Academy Awards, including Jamie Lee Curtis and Tom Cruise.

Colm documented his joy to be at the luncheon with his wife, Cleona Ní Chrualaoí, on social media following their historic Oscar nomination for Best International Feature Film.

He posed with the likes of Steven Spielberg, Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo Del Toro and cinematographer Roger Deakins and his wife, James.

The couple joined The Banshees of Inisherin crew, as well as actor Paul Mescal, for a group photo.

Tom Berkeley and Ross White, directors/writers of the short film An Irish Goodbye, were also there, as were Dublin-born editor Jonathan Redmond (Elvis) and Richard Baneham (Best Visual Effects on Avatar: The Way of Water).

The Oscars take place on Sunday, March 12 and the Irish are up for a record-breaking 14 nominations.

Meanwhile, first-time nominee Paul Mescal, who is competing with Farrell for Best Actor, was spotted talking to Everything Everywhere All At Once's Michelle Yeoh.

Next month will see Ireland's nominees gather at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 12.

And if any of them bag a win, they must keep their speech to no more than 45 seconds long.

Academy President Janet Yang warned the nominees that if they win the coveted gold statue, their "acceptance speech must be 45 seconds" long due to the length of the ceremony.

She told nominees at the luncheon on Monday: "You win a coveted golden statue, your speech must be 45 seconds tops.

"We have worked really hard to represent all awards live on the show this year. So we need to be sensitive to our running time, you need to work with us.

"This is live television after all. Translation: 'keep it short, sweet and to the point please'. And to be clear, that’s 45 seconds total. For instance, if an award is shared amongst a group, either one person speaks for the group or each person gets the opportunity to thank one person."

She also told nominees that the handling of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at last year's ceremony was "inadequate."

She said: "I'm sure you all remember we experienced an unprecedented event at the Oscars.

"What happened onstage was wholly unacceptable and the response from our organisation was inadequate."
