Ireland's new Living with Covid plan - more lockdown pain, timeframe for pubs, retail, sport and all we know

Ireland's new Living with Covid plan is set to be announced by Taoiseach Micheal Martin later today.

The UK revealed their roadmap on Monday which predicts a full return to normal by mid-June - but don't expect things to be as optimistic on this side of the Irish Sea.

Instead the country is set for months more of "severe restrictions" with the hospitality sector not even being considered for reopening until mid-summer.

So, here is everything we know so far about what's to come in today's announcement by the Taoiseach.

More lockdown pain

The announcement won't signal the end of lockdown anytime soon, instead we will be looking at "severe restrictions" for weeks to come.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin told the Irish Mirror's Ciara Phelan earlier last week: "What’ll happen next will be modest, I wouldn’t overstate it in the sense of announcements and so on.

“We are looking at a continuation of severe restrictions certainly right into April.

“We’ll have some look at construction but then again it won’t be a full return to construction, we’ll assess what the public health advice is.

“We’ve already certainly indicated that beyond Easter we’ll look at it again but until the end of April you can look at significant restrictions and we’ll review it after that then because we’ll have to see where we are.”

Very few changes on March 5

Lockdown was originally supposed to end on March 5, it is safe to say this is not what will be happening.

All the rules like the 5km limit, no meeting with other households and the likes will not be changing - so March is going to be much the same as the first two months of the year.

Nothing will be changing regarding pubs and restaurants

We're sorry to say that people gasping for a pint in their local pub won't be getting any particularly good news on Tuesday.

The UK will be back in beer gardens in April, Ireland will not be.

The Taoiseach confirmed at the weekend that they will not even consider opening hospitality until mid-summer.

People will be hoping the roadmap will offer some timeline as to when exactly mid-summer is - but there is no guarantee.

What's coming back first?

Schools will return on a phased basis from next Monday, with similar efforts to get the childcare sector back operational, but little else changes for the average punter.

The Government wants to assure people that they will soon be able to get outdoors for sports and activities as it’s good for our mental health, but no firm dates will be promised.
