Ireland's laboured win over Russia hasn't swayed Joe Schmidt off semi-final mission

Ireland's laboured win over Russia has not swayed Joe Schmidt off Mission:Semi-Final.

While a number of regulars were rested or came off the bench, it was an unconvincing pool victory for Schmidt's side, with the bonus point only secured 18 minutes from time.

If, as expected, Ireland make the last eight then they will play New Zealand or South Africa in 15 or 16 days' time.

After the loss to Japan and yesterday's performance in Kobe, Schmidt will have to find a spark from somewhere.

"I do think we’ve got to take it one game at a time, particularly having lost last week," said Schmidt, who expressed himself pleased with the performance against the minnows.

"So we will set our sights on Samoa because we need to win there to have a chance of qualifying and as I said if we get a win with a little bit more we know we’re in a quarter-final, we control that ourselves.

“And, in the end, when you get to a quarter-final everything hinges on the quarter-final itself.

"It becomes very much a one-off game and one thing I learned from last time at the World Cup is that you can be on an upswing.

"But if you’ve got injuries or you’ve got a little bit of a confidence hit because you’ve got a number of new guys in."

Schmidt admitted that Ireland were still adapting to the hot and humid conditions.

"I do think the humidity is something we're not used to playing with," he said. "In the first game, it was in drops of rain and we're reasonably well-equipped to deal with that because we've played with those conditions a number of times.

"In a potentially dry stadium with a roof, to have the humidity as it was and the moisture content like it was, it is a little bit foreign to us. Game to game, we will continue to adjust."

Schmidt may have to call up a second back row replacement due to a rib injury suffered by Jordi Murphy, who only joined the squad last Tuesday after Jack Conan had to return home, in the 35-0 victory.

However Schmidt has said Johnny Sexton, Joey Carbery and Rob Kearney should be fine.

A further update on Murphy is expected this morning.
