Ireland's Joe Ward turns professional in big blow to Ireland's Olympic hopes

Two-time World silver medalist Joe Ward has announced that he will turn professional with immediate effect.

The light heavyweight fighter from Moate has signed a management contract with New York-based Times Square Boxing.

The 26-year-old is the current captain of the Irish amateur team and has one of the most decorated amateur records in the country.

The news will come as a big blow to Ireland's Olympics hopes as Ward would have been seen as one of their best medal hopes at the 2020 games.

Ward told The Irish Times: “I’m excited to begin my professional journey under the guidance of Times Square Boxing.

“I loved fighting for Ireland and had a very rewarding amateur career.  My decision to turn professional was not easy.

"I’m excited to represent my country in the professional ranks and bring a world championship home to Ireland.”

Ward was tipped to medal in Tokyo next year and had he won a gold, could have skyrocketed his professional worth.
