Ireland's heatwave end confirmed - here's what Met Eireann's forecasting for the next 48 hours

Ireland's heatwave has come to an end but the weekend will continue very warm - albeit with frequent thunderstorms around the country.

Rain, hail and thunderstorms battered a number of counties on Friday afternoon and that's set to stick around overnight.

That'll lead into a wet Saturday for a large part of Ireland - before it gets "refreshing" on Sunday.

A nationwide status yellow high temperature warning remains in place for Saturday morning, but here's what the Met Eireann experts are saying for the rest of the weekend.

Saturday

"Tomorrow, Saturday, will be a mainly dry day with sunshine for most, though it will be hazier in the east. Isolated showers will develop in west Ulster, Munster and Connacht later in the day. Highest temperatures of 23 to 27 degrees generally, slightly fresher along the east coast in a light to moderate northeasterly breeze."

Saturday night

"Mostly dry with good clear spells but some cloud around also. Temperatures will generally not fall below 13 to 16 degrees in light and variable breezes."

Sunday

"Sunny spells with some scattered showers developing in the afternoon. Staying warm with highest temperatures of 22 to 26 degrees, but feeling a little more refreshing in light to moderate northerly breezes. Largely dry and clear overnight with just a few showers in northwestern coastal areas. A mild night with temperatures generally holding above 14 degrees."

Monday

Overall, conditions are expected to turn far cooler from next week onwards with temperatures falling to average for the time of year.

"Less humid on Monday. There will be a fair amount of cloud around with the best of the sunshine in the south and southeast. Highest temperatures typically ranging 19 to 23 degrees, warmest in the southeast. Light to moderate northeast breezes".
