Ireland's gyms: When they are set to reopen as restrictions lifted over next few weeks

Gyms could be open towards the start of June if Cabinet sign off on the reported plans being put forward this morning.

Single-person training is touted as coming back from June 7 in gyms across the country.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin will address the nation on Thursday to announce the latest lockdown plan.

It's expected that the Taoiseach will confirm a raft of restrictions set to be eased as the vaccination programme continues to roll out.

It's also expected that Mr Martin will reveal further plans for easing Ireland's lockdown rules throughout the summer.

Mr Martin has promised to give "clarity" when he makes his national address regarding the country's summer reopening.

There were optimistic signs emerging on Wednesday night that the Government would be able to push on with plans to lift restrictions.

Only last week, the Tánaiste put forward that he would be pushing for exercise classes to return among other things.

Speaking on Instagram, Leo Varadkar said: "I'd love to get back to the gym but again, no decision has been made on that. What will happen now is that Cabinet will meet next week - probably around Thursday or Friday - and with the advice from Nphet, we'll be able to set out what can open in May and give some indication as to what will open in June or July.

"I know gyms are opening in England and Northern Ireland, if they haven't already, and people are keen to get back to them. I guarantee you that if anyone's going to make the case to Cabinet for that (gyms reopening), it's going to be me!"

When will gyms reopen in Ireland?

After a positive meeting between the Cabinet sub-committee and NPHET last night, we got word late on Wednesday of a number of key dates.

And though it's a little after other restrictions are lifted, it's expected that gyms will be allowed to re-open for single-person training on June 7.

Health officials were always wary of opening gyms again given the possibility of a Covid outbreak from an indoor setting where hygiene standards might be lower than other areas.

But we'll get back on the weights just in time for the summer bods if all goes well.
