Ireland's foreign holiday hope after these comments from Government leaders

With a good chunk of the world managing to successfully fight off Covid-19, there have been talks of an EU 'green cert' to allow people to travel abroad in the second half of 2021.

Countries like Spain, France and Portugal will all be targets for Irish people in need of some sun, while the likes of Italy, Greece or the Netherlands are all options too, if the cert gets the all-clear.

Already, we've seen countries like Australia once again open its borders for international travel.

We got some key comments on the possibility for Irish people from Government officials earlier this week.

Tánaiste: Changes will be 'gradual'

Leo Varadkar has ruled out the idea of a June getaway - but hinted that the opportunity could come not long after.

Mr Varadkar told the Irish Mirror June is too soon for fully vaccinated people to plan trips abroad and any easing of rules on international travel will only be permitted after our economy and society is largely reopened.

He said he will make the case for international travel when it is safe to do so but said “we’re just not there for June, it’s going to be later in the summer or later in the year.”

Simon Coveney urges Irish to wait

Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has stated although the EU green passport will be up and running in June, Irish people will be urged not to book flights.

He said:

"For now, the message is no non-essential international travel.

"It’s against the law.

"I think that the green passport system will be in place by the start of June - that’s the plan.

"That doesn’t necessarily mean though that Ireland or other countries will buy into it from day one.

"But certainly at some stage over the next number of months, I think you will see the benefit of the potential for international travel again..”

Eamon Ryan: It'll be "months, not weeks" before foreign travel

Perhaps the clearest point came from the Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan.

While Mr Ryan stopped short of offering any date that we could jet off, he added that he is hopeful that Ireland has come through the worst of the pandemic.

"Wider opening up of travel that will also come. The exact date, I think we have to hold back on, just for fear if we say, let's say; in the next few weeks in this critical period we have another spike, you don't want to dash people's hopes again.

"What I would like to see as transport minister, is that we do not have another stop-start in regard to the previous experience, we do not want to be into another lockdown. I don't believe we will.

"So let's take us step by step, we are on a gradual improved way out of this.

"People will be able to take holidays abroad, it is coming, but the exact timeline, the exact date? I don't think we should raise false expectations, with regards to that.

"But it will be coming within a number of months I expect."
